Water Wise Measures Start

11 December 2019

New guidelines on water use have been released by Inverell Shire Council in response to the ongoing drought and the increasing demand on water supplies.

At their recent meeting, Inverell Shire councillors voted unanimously to adopt new guidelines for water users in Inverell, Gilgai, Tingha, Mount Russell, Delungra, Yetman and Ashford.

Mayor Paul Harmon says the changes will come into effect immediately and will impact residents and commercial premises connected to the Copeton Dam supply and also those connected to water supplies in Ashford and Yetman.

“The permanent restrictions apply during Daylight Saving Time and are common sense measures which mean use of sprinklers, micro sprays and fixed hoses is not permitted in the heat of the day between 8am and 6pm”.

“Also, washing down hard surfaces must be undertaken with a high pressure cleaner or hose fitted with a water efficient nozzle”.

Mr Harmon said that since the Copeton town water supply was commissioned in 1982 there has never been a need to impose water restrictions at Inverell, Gilgai, Tingha, Mount Russell and Delungra.

“This has allowed growth and development of the shire, however with the ongoing drought and current high demand on standpipes by water carters for drinking water and also the need to take steps to ensure the security of the water supply”

Copeton Dam services residential and commercial properties in Inverell and surrounding villages and also properties along the 70 kilometre pipeline from Tingha to Delungra.

“At this point in time there is sufficient water in Copeton Dam to supply the Copeton system for several years, however, as a community we must be vigilant with the current extended drought”.

Council is closely monitoring all town water supplies including Ashford and Yetman, and will keep the community advised of any changes in circumstance as the drought continues.

“Council staff are communicating regularly with WaterNSW, who are the operators of Copeton Dam and Pindari Dam and we will certainly be updating the community on any changes to higher level restrictions if required”.

Information brochures will be distributed to residents, commercial properties, clubs and schools in the coming week.

Cr Harmon indicated any change to water restriction levels will be shared in news bulletins, on Council’s social media and Water Conservation webpage.
