Life saving skills

10 July 2018

AS many students eased into a two-week holiday break, a dozen youth took up the challenge to become fully qualified in First Aid as part of a free youth initiative hosted by Inverell Shire Council. The first aid course, funded by a NSW Youth Opportunities grant, was fully subscribed with trainer Greg Vine teaching the participating teens the essentials of responding in an emergency.

The State Government and Inverell Shire Council are working together to make three problem intersections in Inverell safer. Traffic calming works are being installed at the hot spots thanks to a grant of $152,000 from the New South Wales Government’s Safer Roads program, funding that is being matched by Council.

Locals are urged to have their say in how the New South Wales Government’s $1.3 billion Regional Growth Fund will be spent in Inverell Shire. The Stronger Country Communities grant has been established to build infrastructure such as new parks, playgrounds, pathways and community centres, libraries and local parks.

A recent community meeting between Bonshaw residents and Council to discuss local issues is set to result in a flurry of activities for the village’s 180-strong population. The Bonshaw Hall Committee, a main stay of Bonshaw community activities and development, hosted a visit from Inverell Shire Council earlier this week, with both parties declaring the meeting a success.

A-Z Youth Guide

Businesses, clubs and service organisations are being urged to add their details to a new A-Z Youth Directory publication being developed by Inverell Shire Council. Council mayor Paul Harmon says the directory will highlight pathways for youth to get involved in local clubs, programs, sport and volunteering and is free to businesses and organisations.

Saturday night was cause for significant celebration at Inverell’s Black and White Charity Masquerade Ball with White Ribbon Australia formally presenting the community of Inverell with a certificate of recognition as Australia’s first White Ribbon Community.

Cod Cash Hooks Major Sponsor

The Sapphire City Cod Cash competition has announced its major sponsor ahead of the April event. The nine-day competitive fishing event has secured MO Tackle and Outdoors as its major sponsor and will offer an overall prize pool in excess of $25,000 to anglers.
