Public choice for art

30 October 2019

A DELUGE of creative artworks from kindergarten to year 6 students flowed into Council this week as part of a competition to add extra colour to parks across the shire and promote an anti-litter message.

The artworks are all entries to Council’s ‘Don’t Mess with our Shire’ art competition, which invites students to create artworks to be installed on waste bins across the shire.

Inverell Shire Council’s mayor and deputy mayor received the entries this week and led the difficult task of determining the finalists which will go to a public vote.

Mayor Harmon says from a total of 136 entries, 12 finalists have been selected which will be displayed at Inverell Shire Library from 4 – 16 November and he urges the public to drop in to the library to vote for their favourite artwork.

“Councillor Anthony Michael and I were both impressed with the quality and diversity of the numerous entries received and it’s great to see this level of participation with more than 130 artworks entered”.

“Some of these kids prepared their entries during the school holidays at vacation care, while the likes of Inverell Public and Ross Hill Public Schools had students create their artworks in the classroom”.

Councillor Anthony Michael added he’s happy to see that young people are thinking about the future of their shire and the environment.

“There’s some very thoughtful works of art here including themes such as minimising waste, protecting our waterways, making sure we recycle and reducing litter”.

Winning artworks to be installed art will be featured on steel waste bins across the shire will be the result of the public vote.

Competition winners will be announced 22 November 2019.
