Australia Day Guest Set To Inspire

3 January 2019

On 26 January, Inverell Shire will come together as a community to celebrate the national day, with Australia Day Ambassador, James Fry, set to join our local festivities in Victoria Park.

Mr. Fry is a Sydney based author and his debut memoir That Fry Boy, released in 2015, details his raw personal story of suffering through bullying and alcohol abuse as well as first-hand experiences with violent extremism.

Having turned his life around, Mr. Fry has worked directly with at-risk youth and more recently has focused on the field of countering violent extremism and also speaking with young offenders in maximum security facilities.

Having been appointed as a Multicultural NSW Ambassador, Mr. Fry heads up the Remove the Hate from the Debate campaign, which aims to equip young people with a range of tools to deal with hate speech they may encounter online.

Inverell Shire mayor Paul Harmon says the local Australia Day committee welcomes Fry’s appointment as ambassador and believes Mr. Fry’s message will resonate with many attending Inverell’s celebrations.

“Australia Day is such a special day and an opportunity to showcase what’s great about our community. I know that our shire will put on a memorable day and we’re delighted to be hosting a young leader like James Fry”.

“Last year’s event attracted a terrific crowd and we’re expecting to see big numbers again this year to see who claims the Australia Day awards for citizen and young citizen of the year, as well as event of the year”.

Cr Harmon says the Australia Day Committee had a difficult job on their hands to decide on award winners for the day’s celebrations and was impressed with the number and quality of nominees received.

“What’s clear from the nominations received is: we have a number of very talented and selfless people in our committee that do incredible work. From those who have volunteered for decades to help fundraise or run a local sporting club through to others that have played a key role to help farmers affected by drought”.

Winners of the awards will be announced at Victoria Park on Saturday 26 January, with the event starting from 7.30am.
