Street art class on offer

14 June 2019

A MONOLITHIC seven-metre long concrete slab on Old Bundarra Road will be the canvas for a new street art workshop for youth taking place on Saturday 22 June.

The free workshop, to be held at the Skate Park for ages 14-20, will be led by professional street artist Damon Moroney, who will teach design ideas for murals, street art techniques and also involve participants in painting their own designs.

Mr Moroney’s career as a professional artist spans over 15 years working with businesses, councils and communities to teach art and also engage youth to deal with hotspots of graffiti by involving them in the creation of public art.

Having worked extensively along the mid north coast of New South Wales, Mr Moroney says his aim is to get youth involved in public art and provide a place to express their art.

Fresh from creating a massive coastal mural along the outside wall of Shelly Beach near Port Macquarie, Mr Moroney has set his sights on guiding the youth away from graffiti and illegal tags.

Council mayor Paul Harmon explained the site of the workshop will be Inverell Skate Park and he believes a new sign custom designed by local youth will provide the ideal entrance to the park.

“The skate park is a tremendously popular site for youth and it’s not uncommon to see more than 40 young people using the facilities at any one time”.

“Recent improvements have focused on improving safety, shade, seating and also increasing usage of the site for novice skaters and scooter riders”.

“Having a professional artist like Damon in Inverell is a fantastic opportunity for our local youth to be involved in creating what I expect will be an iconic piece of art for our town”.

Registrations for the street art workshop are now open, with the form available at https://inverell.nsw.gov.au/event/street-art-workshop/
