Byron Street renewal to start

2 January 2020

A rejuvenation of Inverell’s Byron Street will commence next week as part of the second stage of the Town Centre Renewal Plan.

The works will focus on the section of Byron Street between Campbell and Vivian Streets and mayor Paul Harmon believes the program will ensure Inverell stays ahead of the pack as a retail destination.

“Our research shows Inverell has a retail catchment of around 60,000 people. These works will transform the western end of Byron Street into a fresh, attractive retail centre that visitors and shoppers want to return to”.

Cr Harmon believes once the 16-week works program is complete, the upgraded town centre will entice visitors to stay for longer periods of time – allowing businesses greater opportunity.

“Council is mindful that these works will have an impact on retailers and residents and for that reason, we are committing to 12-hour workdays during construction to ensure we complete the work in the shortest period possible”.

Cr Harmon stated sixteen trees will be retained, eleven London Plane trees will be removed and a further eleven new trees will be planted in autumn towards the conclusion of the project.

“The initial 6 weeks of the project will focus on the stretch of Byron Street between Campbell Street and Otho Street and there will be some temporary changes to traffic conditions on the southern side of Byron Street during this time”.

There will be temporary changes to traffic flow in Byron Street, however, footpath access will remain open at all times.

“Short term, we will have some temporary alteration to parking while the project is in progress, including parallel parking on the Coles side of Byron Street between Campbell and Otho Street”.

Council requests road users to exercise care and consideration when travelling through the works site.

Further details regarding the Byron Street renewal works are available on our Town Centre Remewal Plan webpage.
