Off-road recreational circuit opens to Public

20 June 2019

Inverell’s highly anticipated off-road cycling track on Lake Inverell Drive is expected to attract large numbers of outdoor enthusiasts when it opens to the community for recreational use this week.

The construction of the $1.4 million criterium circuit track and sports facility by Inverell Shire Council has been underway since March thanks to funding provided by the New South Wales Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.

Council mayor, Paul Harmon says the project is ahead of schedule and with the recent primer seal applied, the 1,600 metre looped track is now open for the general public to enjoy.

“The off-road circuit provides a place for individuals, families and groups to get involved in outdoor activities in a safe location which is away from the dangers of the road network.”

Counsellor Harmon indicated “the final stage of construction, the asphalt, will take place in October when the weather is warmer.

“I commend our team who have been busy completing link ups, footpaths, installing signage, roadmarkings and fencing to make the circuit user-friendly”.

“As people enter the facility from Lake Inverell Drive, they will find a map of the facility and looped track so they can choose to complete a shorter distance loop or a more challenging circuit”, Cr Harmon explained.

Once completed, the circuit will provide an official venue for hosting competition activities such as cycle racing, duathlons, triathlons, fun runs and cross country.

“The track has been designed to comply with Cycling NSW racing requirements, so we expect the Lake Inverell precinct project will not only draw visitors from far afield to the Inverell area but also provide a valuable community facility for major sports events”, said Cr Harmon.

The off-road recreational circuit will be open to the public from Friday 21 June, following an initial trial conducted by members from the Inverell Cycle Club this week.
