Off-leash dog park underway
15 January 2021
RESIDENTS and their four-legged friends will soon have access to a new fenced off-leash dog park in Inverell, with construction underway at the site adjacent to Lion’s Park.
The new enclosed park stretches over 4,900m2 and includes a 1.8 m-high boundary fence, extensive shade and self-closing gates, with watering points and agility equipment soon to be added.
Inverell Shire Council mayor, Paul Harmon inspected the site recently and says the Australian Government-funded project will benefit residents and visitors of the Inverell Shire area, and their dogs.
“Council encourages responsible pet ownership. A fenced, open space gives dog owners confidence and also helps them teach their dog skills in off-leash behaviour and control”.
“The location is ideal and connects to the town wide shared path, which means owners can reach the site on foot or by vehicle”.
“While Inverell has had a designated off-leash area for years, we understand that sometimes it can be difficult for owners to exercise their dogs safely in an unfenced area. There’s also an increasing number of people travelling with dogs, so this is also a win for visitors to our region”.
Member for New England, Barnaby Joyce, said the Australian Government was proud to provide funding support for this latest addition to Inverell’s dog park facilities.
“Construction of the park will not only deliver an important asset for the region, it’s helping to drive Inverell’s economic recovery,” Mr Joyce said.
“Our communities have faced the combined effects of drought, bushfires and now COVID-19, that’s why we are supporting projects to create employment and help deliver projects with long-lasting benefits for local people.”
The fully fenced area will allow dog owners to let up to two of their dogs run free without constraint and is expected to be completed by March 2021.
Accessible 24/7, visitors to the park are also encouraged to observe the guidelines displayed at the park entrance to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all pet owners.
