Macintyre Lions Collect 100 Tonnes Over 10 Years

2 December 2021

SIX AND A HALF tonnes of white goods and e-waste were collected from the front lawns of locals this past weekend, marking 10 years of the Macintyre Lions Club’s yearly recycling collection.

Each year, the Club assists Inverell Shire Council with the annual town pick-up of white goods and e-waste items such as fridges, washing machines, dryers, microwaves and televisions from local households.

Macintyre Lions Club’s publicity officer, Bill Sutton says what started out as an environmental project idea 10 years ago, has now become one of the most popular and successful recycling projects in the Inverell Shire.

“The Inverell Macintyre Lions Club first became involved with the initiative in 2011 to help reduce the amount of recyclable waste being dumped into landfill.”

“This idea has since turned into a yearly service to the Inverell community which sees volunteers, members and friends of the Club help transport white goods and e-waste from households to the local recycling centre, where the items are dismantled for parts and the remaining pieces recycled.”

“It has been the Macintyre Lions Club’s pleasure to assist Inverell Shire Council in providing the community with this free service for the last decade.”

The total amount of waste collected over the 10-year period has now surpassed a whopping 100 tonnes.

“Club records show that over 100 tonnes of recyclables have been collected and members have devoted approximately 800 hours of hard work to the project over the years.”

“This year alone, there were 20 members of the Inverell Macintyre Lions Club who collected 6.56 tonnes of white goods and e-waste.”

For more information about the yearly collection, please contact Council’s Civil and Environmental Services department on (02) 6728 8200.

A wide variety of white goods and electronic waste items were collected at this year’s collection, including refrigerators, freezers, computers, printers and other household items.
