Inverell talks youth road safety

24 May 2021

TEENS across the community will be educated on the real life consequences of irresponsible decisions when driving, with Melissa McGuinness, founder of “YOU CHOOSE – Youth Road Safety”, paying a visit to the Shire on Monday, May 31.

Following the 2012 car accident that claimed the life her 18 year old son, Melissa and her husband Peter started a non-for-profit charitable organisation that aims to change driving behaviours among young people.

Their work with the charity YOU CHOOSE has seen the McGuinnesses speak to teen drivers across Australia, be featured on a range of television networks and also earned a nomination for Australian of the Year.

This week, Inverell Shire Council mayor, Paul Harmon announced Council will host an information session with Mrs McGuinness on Monday 31 May at the Inverell Sporting Complex Clubhouse.

“We are thrilled to be hosting a visit from Melissa McGuinness next Monday and this session on Monday night will be free of charge and open to the public.

“Melissa has such a powerful and harrowing story that we all should hear in the hope that we can change the driving culture in our country”.

In 2020, almost one quarter of road fatalities were caused by the driving choices made by people aged 16 to 25.

“YOU CHOOSE aims to empower young people to start saving lives by speaking out about their peers’ reckless driving habits to lower the number of fatalities occurring at the hands of young drivers.”

The session is free of charge and open to teens, parents, carers and anyone interested in road safety, with light refreshments available in the evening. Book your free ticket now at www.trybooking.com/766325.
