Holiday fun with hands on science

SYDNEY based Fizzics Education will be in Inverell next month to lead a series of fun and quirky hand-on science classes for kids during the school holidays.

Inverell Shire Council is hosting the visit thanks to funding from the NSW Youth Opportunities program and mayor Paul Harmon says the free events are open to young people aged 5 – 20 years.

“The classes are all about having fun while learning and Council has worked with the award winning team at Fizzics Education to offer a range of classes to engage kids in science”.

“Fizzics travels all over the country doing these workshops and their team includes palaeontologists, educators, chemistry and physics gurus. I’m delighted Council is able to offer these workshops for free as part of the ‘It Starts with You’ youth calendar”.

Cr Harmon says a Digging Dinosaurs class for 5-12 year olds was booked out within half an hour of opening and he expects a similar response for workshops held during the rest of the week.

Children aged 5-12 can also sign up for a Slime, Bubbles and Sherbet class covering the basics of chemistry with learning to create slime, delicious sherbet and gigantic bubbles.

High schoolers will have a chance to learn stomach churning experiments in a Gross Science class which includes everything from how to create fake dandruff to fake blood on the schedule.

“We’re also hosting a Liquid Nitrogen workshop, including liquid nitrogen ice cream making for young people aged 13-20 and also have a night time workshop exploring the night sky with a Telescope Class for ages 8-20”.

Telescopes are provided on the night and participants will be able to explore the Milky Way, learn more about planetary orbits and see surface features of the moon.

All classes will be held at the Inverell Sports Complex Clubhouse. The full list of workshops and dates are:

• > Telescope Workshop for 8-20 years: 16 April, 7 pm class and 8.30pm class
• > Liquid Nitrogen show for 13-20 years: 16 April, 3 pm – 4.15pm
• > Slime Bubbles and Sherbet for 5-12 years: 16 April, 12 noon – 1 pm
• > Gross Science for 13-20 years: 17 April, 1pm – 2.30pm
• > Digging Dinosaurs for 5-12 years: 17 April, 9 am – 10.30am
