Inverell District Family History Group

About Us

The history of Inverell and its surrounding district is rich and diverse. Traditionally the fertile river valleys of the district supported a number of aboriginal tribes and clans of the Kamilaroi Nation whose language and association gave rise to many place names in the area. What then began as a small community of predominantly Caledonian pastoralists grew through agricultural expansion, mining and business enterprise to embrace many social groups from convicts to the squattocracy and diverse cultural groups from China, Germany and Greece.

Since 1984 The Inverell District Family History Group has been dedicated to researching, collecting and preserving this rich history. Our extensive collection of resources is available for all to view in our Research Centre located within the Inverell Shire Public Library. Through caring for this collection and undertaking research we hope to foster the study of family and local history and to provide assistance in teaching and improving research skills in these areas of study.
