2022 Australia Day Ambassador Announced

A GUEST like no other, 2019 Volunteer of the Year Bob Fitzgerald is set to join the festivities in Inverell’s Victoria Park on 26 January to celebrate Australia Day.

Inverell Shire Council has welcomed the announcement, with Mr Fitzgerald’s lengthy history helping others expected to strike a chord with many locals.

As the Chief Inspector of the Blacktown Police Area Command, Bob is an active member of Western Sydney both on and off duty, having lived in the region for the past 40 years and worked across Sydney’s police stations for over 30 years.

Chief Inspector Fitzgerald helps to assist Aboriginal people become officers in the NSW Police Force as a course facilitator for Indigenous Police Recruiting, and is also a member of Blacktown Mount Druitt Aboriginal Community Justice Groups to help keep Aboriginal people out of the justice system.

Away from the force, Chief Inspector Fitzgerald is passionate about advocating for and promoting multiculturalism, which can be seen in his service as Chair for the SydWest Multicultural Services’ Board, where he helps to address cultural diversity issues and respond to community needs and opportunities.

Chief Inspector Fitzgerald is a member of a number of groups that support local community members in the Western Sydney region, particularly of local sporting groups, where he serves as president, vice-president and life member for a number of organisations.

To add to his achievements, Chief Inspector Fitzgerald’s vast dedication and contribution to the Blacktown community scored him the title of Blacktown Citizen of the Year in 2016 on top of a plethora of awards that he had already accomplished.

Australia Day celebrations will take place across the shire, with the main celebration to take place in Inverell’s Victoria Park from 7.30am. All attendees are reminded to practice COVID safe measures and stay home if unwell.

Chief Inspector Bob Fitzgerald will deliver the Ambassador’s address at the Inverell Australia Day celebrations which will take place in Victoria Park on Wednesday, 26 January.
