Inverell Shire Council re-establishes Alcohol-Free Zones

3 May 2021

ALCOHOL-FREE zones will be re-established across the Shire, following a resolution to help enhance public safety at Council’s March Ordinary meeting late last month.

Inverell Shire Council Mayor, Paul Harmon says this important policing tool helps to keep community safety at a high and street crime rates at a low.

“Our police officers do a fantastic job by regulating and controlling the consumption and possession of alcohol in these areas.”

“This helps keep our community safe and stops anti-social behaviour and street crime at the source before actions escalate to serious crime.”

Alcohol-free zones have been re-instated, and will be due for a follow up review on 31 December 2024.

“The zones comprise of public roads, footpaths and car parks within the Inverell, Ashford, Delungra and Tingha townships, where the consumption and possession of alcohol is prohibited for the four year period.”

“Inverell Police and the Inverell Liquor Consultative Committee have shown their full support with the renewal of these zones.”

Signage will be updated in the affected areas in the coming weeks.
