Recycling deal sealed

8 March 2021

A NEW partnership has begun which will see the future of recycling in Inverell stay local.

The new deal between Inverell Shire Council and Glen Industries was inked recently, which will see the Glen Innes based Australian Disability Enterprise take on the management of the recycling centre on Burtenshaw Road.

Council representatives met with the Glen Industries team recently to tour the Material Recovery Facility, where the recyclable materials collected from homes and businesses are taken to be sorted into different waste streams.

Mayor Paul Harmon says he’s delighted to be signing on to the new agreement and welcomed the news that several long-term MRF staff will be staying on under the new operator.

“The team at the MRF do a terrific job sorting and recovering recyclable material and ensuring these items can be kept out of landfill.”

General Manager Kylie Hawkins said Glen Industries is thrilled to embark on this venture with Council and expand the business’s operations into the Inverell area.

“This keeps jobs local and ensures we can continue to provide an essential service for the community”.

“We are dedicated to our core business which is to provide meaningful and valued employment”.

Ms Hawkins believes the partnership is a win-win for both organisations.

“We feel Glen Industries partnering with Council is symbiotic – we can provide a reliable and sustainable solution for the recovery of recyclables while enabling jobs to stay local”.

Cr Harmon explained while both parties have been busy behind the scenes, recycling services remain business as usual.

“Kerbside collections continue to run as normal throughout the shire and we thank Glen Industries for helping Council ensure this has been a smooth transition”.
