Dog surveillance steps up

INVERELL Shire residents are being reminded to keep their dogs restrained on a leash at all times in public, with Council rangers stepping up surveillance of local parks.

Mayor of Inverell Shire, Paul Harmon, stressed the need for all dog owners to practice responsible pet ownership.

“Council reminds all pet owners that dogs must be kept on a leash at all times and also keep leashed dogs under control”.

“It is the duty of the owner to take proper responsibility of their dog, particularly in a public place, which is why Council will be taking steps to ensure owners are observing the rules – picking up after their pet and also keeping their dog on a leash”.

In New South Wales, walking your dog without a leash can attract on the spot fines of up to $330 from Council.

Cr Harmon explained that Council rangers are permitted to hand out on-the-spot fines of up to $330 for each dog that is unrestrained.

“It is imperative that all dogs, big or small, are on a leash and under effective control at all times. Any person controlling more than four dogs in public is considered to not have effective control”.

Inverell’s two designated off-leash areas are located in the park land area behind Cousins Motor Inn, and a new fenced off-leash dog exercise area adjacent to Lions Park will be complete in March.
