Water Wise Measures Continue

AS the warmer weather arrives to the region, Inverell Shire Council mayor Paul Harmon is reminding residents that water use conservation measures now apply across the shire.

In November last year, council voted unanimously to introduce permanent water conservation measures during Daylight Saving Time, which guide the use of water in the garden, backyard pools and car washing.

Mayor Harmon explained the measures apply to both residents and commercial premises connected to the Copeton Dam supply and also those connected to water supplies in Ashford and Yetman.

“The permanent measures apply during Daylight Saving Time and mean the use of sprinklers, micro sprays and fixed hoses is not permitted in the heat of the day between 8am and 6pm”.

“Also, washing down hard surfaces must be undertaken with a high pressure cleaner or hose fitted with a water efficient nozzle”.

While Copeton Dam remains steady at 16.5 per cent and Pindari Dam 15.6, Cr Harmon says the measures promote a water wise culture for shire residents and are based on a common sense approach to water use.

“We know that watering in the middle of the day is not water efficient – much of the water evaporates before it reaches the roots of the plant”.

“Mulching, improving the soil and making the right plant species selection for your yard are also a great way of cutting water use”.
