$5M Copeton upgrade hits milestone

2 July 2020

THE $5 MILLION revamp of Copeton Dam Northern Foreshores reached a major milestone this week, with contractors finalising the 400 metre long concrete boat ramp.

Foreshores’ caretaker, Tom Stapleton, says the ramp is the longest in Australia and it will be accessible when dam levels are between 11 and 60 per cent. The second concrete ramp will also be upgraded to provide access when dam levels are above 60 per cent.

Inverell Shire Council mayor, Paul Harmon, says a host of local tradespeople have been completing works across the camp ground, including upgrades to internal roads, earthworks for new car parking and play areas.

“We have had various builders and trades on site constructing the new storage shed for the caretaker, there’s been trenching for gas mains to run public barbecues and also of course the very impressive boat ramp”.

“There’s been a tremendous amount of ground work undertaken for the playground and viewing platforms as well as installation of improved drainage, new camp sites and preparation for a concrete path throughout the grounds.”

Cr Harmon says the next three months will see further construction, including new public amenities and a communal hall with camp kitchen, which will cater for groups of up to 100.

“The communal hall will be a function centre with panoramic views of the dam and will be equipped to host family celebrations, training workshops, presentation nights and even weddings”.

This week, Council has opened tenders for construction of a 224m2 hall, which features sweeping verandahs, stainless steel kitchen and a multipurpose space with expansive views over the dam.

The facility is expected to be fully constructed by January 2021.

With the new amenities being installed in September, the public will have a wait on their hands before being able to access the new facilities, which are funded by the New South Wales Government.

“While it’s great to have access restored to the boat ramp and see people back out on the water, the public amenities are still being redeveloped and remain closed.

“We thank members of the public for their patience and understanding while the works are taking place”.
