Inverell Shire Council Commits to Long-Term Strategic Planning for Water and Sewer Services
19 December 2024
IN a decisive move to ensure the sustainable management of water and sewer services, Inverell Shire Council has approved the development of 30-year strategic plans as part of its commitment to providing reliable and high-quality services to the community.
At its Ordinary Meeting on 18 December 2024, Council resolved to proceed with the project, which is estimated to cost $702,000. The initiative is being co-funded by the NSW Government under the Safe and Secure Water Program (SSWP), with the Government contributing 60% of the funding and Council covering the remaining 40% from its water and sewer fund reserves.
The strategic plans will align with the NSW Government’s Regulation and Assurance Framework for Local Water Utilities (LWUs), introduced in July 2022.
By partnering with NSW Public Works, Council has engaged a team with extensive experience in designing, constructing, and planning water and sewerage infrastructure. NSW Public Works will lead the project at an estimated cost of $593,000. Council will also allocate $109,000 to cover additional staff resources to manage the project effectively.
The project is designed to support Council in meeting the objectives of the National Water Initiative, National Competition Policy, and the NSW Water Strategy, ensuring the delivery of secure and sustainable water and sewerage services for the community.
Mayor Cr Kate Dight stated, “Strategic planning is vital to the long-term sustainability of our water and sewer services. This initiative will not only help us meet the growing needs of our community but also strengthen our ability to address future challenges such as climate change, population growth, and infrastructure resilience. We are pleased to partner with the NSW Government to ensure these essential services remain robust and reliable.”
