The Northern Lights Project
Inverell Shire Council collaborated with six councils in northern inland New South Wales in the Northern Lights Project to install energy efficient street lighting across seven urban centres.
Funded by the Australian Government, the project replaced more than 5,000 mercury vapour, metal halide and compact fluorescent street lights, with the latest LED technology.
The LED lighting has saved more than 1,000 mW hours of energy and in excess of $200,000 per annum in electricity costs. Maintenance costs are also reduced, due to the lower failure rate and longer life of LEDs.
