Drought funds to flow to Villages

21 December 2018

VILLAGE halls and clubs will receive a flurry of improvements after Council signed off on where drought funding dollars will be distributed throughout Inverell Shire.

Thanks to the Australian Government’s Drought Communities Programme, Inverell Shire mayor Paul Harmon says eleven projects will kick start in January.

Cr Harmon says the community will see a noticeable impact in villages as halls receive much-needed repairs and additional infrastructure.

“Council understands that many in our rural communities are doing it particularly tough and these projects will hopefully provide a shot in the arm for our villages as well as tick off a few of their wish list items”.

Delungra Bowling Club was among the organisations to secure funding. The non-profit club is run by volunteers, most of whom are farmers.

President John Taylor says the club is humbled by the news the club has secured $49,000 which will fund improvements and also install solar electricity panels.

“Delungra Memorial Bowling and Recreation Club were facing the possibility of closing its doors to increasing costs”.

“Our community has big hearts when it comes to helping the needy and we’ve raised more than $70,000 for a 4-year old boy with brain cancer and $6,700 for breast cancer”.

“As farmers, we’re used to doing it tough but now the Club has a much greater future ahead”.

Cr Harmon says the distribution of funds will reach all corners of the shire.

“Where possible, Council will be engaging local tradies from our rural communities and these projects will keep suppliers busy and dollars injected in to local businesses”.

“The people in our community are resilient, but drought is challenging and Council is certainly focused on making sure these funds are reaching all corners of the shire”.

The eleven projects to start next month will include works at Elsmore, Mount Russell, Bonshaw, Ashford, Delungra, Graman, and Nullamanna, as well as Inverell.

Organisations to snaffle a share of the funding include Delungra Bowling Club; Ashford Bowling Club; Bonshaw Hall Committee; Mount Russell Hall Committee; Elsmore Memorial Hall; Graman Memorial Hall; Delungra CWA Rooms; Nullamanna Hall; and Inverell Equestrian Centre.
