A lake with a view

1 April 2020

WITH A stunning backdrop of a brimming lake and abundant birdlife, local builders have commenced construction of a viewing platform for Lake Inverell along offering visitors a panoramic vista of the popular landmark. Further soon-to-commence works will include a boardwalk and kayak launch facility.

Deputy mayor Cr Anthony Michael met with the project team on site to discuss the project recently and says he expects the viewing area will be a well used asset at the nature reserve.

“The platform itself will be quite large and ideal for picnics, celebrations and even weddings, once the Coronavirus situation is behind us”.

An independent survey conducted in 2017 revealed Lake Inverell is the second most popular outdoor recreation area for shire residents, with the lake and its surrounds being a popular destination for paddle sports, school groups, special needs organisations, nature enthusiasts and also a venue for many family celebrations.

Cr Michael says the viewing area is ideally positioned, providing views upstream and also down to the wall and once completed, will include seating, safety railing and will link directly to a concrete path.

“This means anyone, even those on a walker or in a wheelchair, can easily access the platform and enjoy the lake”.

The viewing platform is the latest in a string of improvements to the Lake Inverell area, which is funded by the New South Wales Government.

“We’re a little hesitant to put a timeline on the works, given the uncertainty around COVID-19, however, after the viewing platform is complete, we will be moving on to construction of the boardwalk and kayak launch facility”.

All works will be constructed along the northern foreshore of the lake and are utilising local tradespeople and designers.

“The project is all about ensuring all residents, regardless of their mobility, can connect with the lake, enjoy the views and easily access the water’s edge if they want to get out on the water”.
