Inverell To Lead White Ribbon Campaign

5 August 2016

WHITE Ribbon Australia will visit Inverell next month to discuss the concept of accrediting Inverell as a White Ribbon Community.

The move comes on the back of a recent partnership between Inverell Shire Council, NSW government agencies such as education, health and law enforcement agencies and community organisations to form the New England Violence Prevention Initiative.

The concept of a White Ribbon Community arose from this process.

The initiative follows an earlier anti domestic violence forum and dinner, which was hosted by the CWA, Rural Outreach and Support Service and NSW Rape and Domestic Violence Services. The event attracted an overwhelming response, providing an ideal platform for a wider community campaign.

Susan Heyman, Executive Director, Hunter New England Health and chair of the new initiative says domestic and family violence is complex and says the community needs to explore news ways to address the issue.

"Our project team has been working with the Inverell community to identify the factors influencing the occurrence of domestic violence. By understanding these, we can target our intervention and prevention programs towards change – changing attitudes and behaviours to say domestic violence is not OK."

Inverell Shire Council general manager Paul Henry believes Inverell now has a real opportunity to make a difference.

"The idea that we can build on the excellent work of passionate individuals, government agencies and community groups to develop a whole community initiative is exciting".

"The fact that White Ribbon Australia will be visiting to discuss the initiative is very positive and it's hoped that we can identify opportunities that can be transferred to other regional communities".

Following the visit by White Ribbon Australia next month, a project team, led by council and supported by community organisations, members and government agencies will commence detailed planning to make the idea a reality.
