Heritage Publications and Photographs
Over the years there have been many books and articles written and/or published about the heritage of the Inverell District.
Two books that tell the history of the Inverell District very well are the following written by local historian Elizabeth Wiedemann:
• World of its own: Inverell's early years, 1827-1920 (ISBN 0 908467 02 8), and
• Holding its own: The Inverell District since 1919 (ISBN 0 646348 55 8).
Another book Ashford - History of a Town "Where is it?" (ISBN 47 069 034 662) written by Barbara Stoessel tells the story of this once thriving rural settlement and is also worth reading.
These books, and other books and articles that have been written by various authors about the Inverell District, can be viewed at the Inverell Shire Public Library.
The Inverell District retains an impressive collection of early photographs. While some photographs are in private collections the Inverell Shire Public Library and the Inverell District Family History Group have photographic collections that are accessible to the public. The George Devine collection at the Inverell Pioneer village is also a wonderful resource.
Another source that is available to the public who are seeking early photographs of the Inverell District is Picture Australia which is part of the National Library of Australia - www.trove.nla.gov.au.
The Picture Australia service has been provided for use by all Australians, to discover our heritage as documented in pictures. Through a single access point, it is possible to search the image collections of many significant cultural institutions, without having to know where the images are held.
